The message of this book is challenging the way organisations motivate their people, there's a gap between what science knows and what business does. The current business operating system - which is built around external, carrot-and-stick motivators - doesn't work and often does harm. We need an upgrade. And science shows the way. This new approach has three essential elements:
Children are taught how to colour in a picture by following the numbers, one number for each colour, colour by colour, number by number and stay between the lines. A significant number of organisations set up a management by numbers system to run the business based on extrinsic (external motivators) that are damaging to employee morale, damaging to productivity and just bad business. Leadership allows for intrinsic motivators, for it's people to experience autonomy, mastery and purpose. There is a need to shift the focus from management by numbers systems to Purpose, Vision and Values based busineses.
